Kashmir Travel Guide: Routes, Costs and the Best Time to Go

Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg — in three, four, five or six nights. This guide sets out what Kashmir actually offers, what a trip
there costs, when to go, and how we run it — written from the routes we operate
ourselves rather than from a brochure.

A sample of the route

Taking Explore Kashmir — 3 Nights as an example —
Srinagar → Gulmarg → Pahalgam → Srinagar, picking up at Srinagar and dropping at Srinagar:

  1. Day 1, Arrival at Srinagar and the Mughal Gardens — You will be received at Srinagar and transferred to your hotel. After freshening up, visit the celebrated Mughal gardens on the banks of the Dal — Nishat Bagh, the Garden of Pleasure, and Shalimar Bagh, the Abode of Love. Nishat is the larger of the two, with an imposing stand of chinar trees on its highest terrace. Overnight in Srinagar.
  2. Day 2, Day excursion to Gulmarg — Set off early for Gulmarg, driving past willow trees, fast-flowing streams and wide green meadows. Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, opens out beneath towering snow-capped peaks and dense forests of fir and pine. Walk at leisure, take a pony ride across to one of the world’s highest golf courses, or ride the Gondola. Return to Srinagar for the night.
  3. Day 3, Day excursion to Pahalgam — Drive out to Pahalgam, the valley of shepherds. En route, visit the Awantipura ruins, an 1,100-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu built by King Awantivarman. At Pahalgam, enjoy the surrounding beauty or walk the two kilometres up to Baisaran, a small village set in pine and fir forest. Overnight in Srinagar.
  4. Day 4, Departure — After breakfast, transfer to Srinagar airport for your onward journey, carrying back happy memories of the valley.

Common questions before booking

Do Himachal rates change by season?

They do. Off season runs 6 January to 15 April and 10 July to 15 December; season is 15 December to 5 January and 15 April to 10 July. Both are quoted openly before you book.

Is the Rohtang and Atal Tunnel trip included in Shimla–Manali?

It is charged separately, by vehicle type, because access depends on conditions and permits. We will quote it with your package.

What is the Silk Route, and is it difficult?

The old trading road between Kalimpong and Lhasa, climbing through the Zuluk loops to high passes above 11,000 feet. It is a road journey, not a trek, but the altitude is real — we build in acclimatisation and run it on homestays with all meals included.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
