Dooars Travel Guide: Routes, Costs and the Best Time to Go

Elephant corridors, tea gardens and the white riverbed at Jayanti. This guide sets out what Dooars actually offers, what a trip
there costs, when to go, and how we run it — written from the routes we operate
ourselves rather than from a brochure.

Why Dooars is worth your leave

The Dooars is the doorway between the plains of Bengal and the Bhutan hills, and one of the most rewarding wildlife belts in eastern India. Tea garden, river, hill, jungle and the Bhutan border, all within a short radius. It is also our most requested student group destination.

A sample of the route

Taking Dooars Forest Trail as an example —
New Mal Junction → Murti (2N) → Chilapata (1N) → Jayanti (1N) → Alipurduar, picking up at New Mal Junction and dropping at Alipurduar:

  1. Day 1, New Mal Junction to Murti — Our representative meets you at New Mal Junction. A short, pleasant drive brings you to Murti, where the river runs beside your accommodation. Settle in and spend the evening by the water. Dinner and overnight at Murti.
  2. Day 2, Murti and the surrounding forest — A full day exploring the forest villages, tea gardens and viewpoints around Murti, with time set aside for the riverbed itself. All meals included; overnight at Murti.
  3. Day 3, Murti to Chilapata — After breakfast we move on to Chilapata, one of the densest stretches of forest in the Dooars and an important elephant corridor. Afternoon and evening at leisure inside the forest surroundings. Dinner and overnight at Chilapata.
  4. Day 4, Chilapata to Jayanti — Continue to Jayanti, set against the Bhutan hills beside its famous white riverbed. Spend the afternoon walking the riverbed and watching the light change on the hills. Dinner and overnight at Jayanti.

When to go

The window we recommend is October to April.
*Special offer price, reduced from ₹ 9,500 per head. Minimum 7 persons travelling together.

Common questions before booking

What is the difference between MAP and AP meal plans?

MAP covers daily breakfast and dinner. AP covers breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner. Our North Bengal, Dooars, Purulia and Sundarban departures usually run on AP, so you are never hunting for a restaurant after a long day out.

Do you book train or flight tickets?

Air and rail fare sit outside our package rates, but we are always glad to advise on the most convenient trains and flights from your departure city.

Can you customise an itinerary?

Yes, and we do it every week. Tell us your dates, the kind of stay you prefer and roughly what you would like to spend, and we build the route around that.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
