Sittong is a Lepcha village on the Riyang river where mandarin orchards run right down to the doorsteps, and in winter the whole hillside turns orange. It is an hour and a half from New Jalpaiguri and almost nobody stops there.
You spend the first night in a homestay among those orchards, then move up to Darjeeling for the famous things done properly — Tiger Hill before dawn, Ghum Monastery, the Padmaja Naidu zoo, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute’s Tenzing Rock, a tea garden and the Batasia Loop. The return runs through Mirik.
