Tamil Nadu Travel Guide: Routes, Costs and the Best Time to Go

The Meenakshi Temple, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari and the Nilgiri hills. This guide sets out what Tamil Nadu actually offers, what a trip
there costs, when to go, and how we run it — written from the routes we operate
ourselves rather than from a brochure.

Why Tamil Nadu is worth your leave

Tamil Nadu gives you temple architecture and hill station air within the same week. Our two routes cover the coastal pilgrimage circuit from Madurai down to Kovalam, and the hill combination of Kodaikanal and Ooty.

What a trip costs

We run 2 itineraries here.
The lowest published rate is ₹ 11,300 per head. Every figure below is

A sample of the route

Taking Spectacular South as an example —
Madurai (1N) → Kodaikanal (2N) → Ooty (2N), picking up at Madurai Airport and dropping at Coimbatore Airport:

  1. Day 1, Madurai — The Athens of the East and the cradle of Tamil culture, where the creation of epics and edifices was actively encouraged. Visit the Sri Meenakshi Temple with its magnificent sculpture, soaring gopurams and hall of a thousand pillars, along with the Thirumalai Nayak Mahal and the Mariamman Teppakulam tank. Overnight at the hotel.
  2. Day 2, Kodaikanal — The name Kodaikanal means the gift of the forest. It is one of the most beautiful and least explored destinations in southern India, with intoxicating air, breathtaking scenery and a serenity that is hard to find in any other hill station. Visit Coaker’s Walk, Green Valley View and the star-shaped lake. Overnight at the hotel.
  3. Day 3, Kodaikanal sightseeing — A second day around the star-shaped lake, the viewpoints and the surrounding shola forest. Overnight at the hotel.
  4. Day 4, Ooty — Ooty is a picturesque landscape of deep forest, green meadows, vast tea gardens and tall eucalyptus trees. Visit the Botanical Garden, the tea estates and factories, and enjoy boating on Ooty Lake. Hiking and horse riding are also available here. Overnight at the hotel.

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
