What to Pack for a Himalayan Trip — A Short, Practical List

Most people over-pack for the hills and still end up cold. The problem is
usually bulk instead of layers.

Clothing

  • Three thin layers beat one thick coat every time
  • A windproof outer — wind, not temperature, is what gets you on a high pass
  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip; hill paths are uneven and often wet
  • Gloves and a warm cap for anything above 10,000 feet, even in summer

For the high passes

On the Silk Route you cross above
11,000 feet, and Sela Pass on the
Tawang route sits at 13,700.
Move slowly, drink more water than feels necessary, and tell your driver early if
you feel unwell.

Documents

Valid photo ID for every traveller, without exception. Inner Line Permits for
Arunachal and permits for the Andamans are arranged by us, but they are issued
against your documents.

Small things that matter

A power bank — village supply can be intermittent. Regular medication in your
day bag, not the boot. Cash, because card machines are optimistic in the hills.

What you can leave behind

Heavy suitcases. Hill roads and homestay stairs both prefer a soft bag.

Common questions before booking

Are children charged full price?

It varies. On several North Bengal departures children below five travel free, five to eight years are charged fifty per cent, and above eight counts as an adult. The price note on each package page states the rule.

How far ahead should I book?

For the Pujas, December and the Kashmir tulip window, six to eight weeks. Offbeat homestays have very few rooms and fill first.

Is Sanjhbati Tourism registered?

Yes. We have operated since 2015 and are MSME approved by the Government of India. Our founder and proprietor is Sajal Manna.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
