Sundarban Travel Guide: Routes, Costs and the Best Time to Go

Two nights on the water in the largest mangrove delta on earth. This guide sets out what Sundarban actually offers, what a trip
there costs, when to go, and how we run it — written from the routes we operate
ourselves rather than from a brochure.

Why Sundarban is worth your leave

For a Bengali household, hilsa in the monsoon is not a meal but an occasion. Our Sundarban departure puts that occasion on a launch, with the river on every side, the watchtowers at Sajnekhali and Dobanki, and a full hilsa menu running in the kitchen.

What a trip costs

We run 1 itinerary here.
The lowest published rate is ₹ 3,300 per head. Every figure below is
per person and includes accommodation, the stated meal plan, private transport,
all sightseeing in the itinerary, and toll tax, parking and driver allowance.

A sample of the route

Taking Sundarban Hilsa Festival 2026 as an example —
Sonakhali → Sundarban → Sonakhali, picking up at Sonakhali and dropping at Sonakhali:

  1. Day 1, Sonakhali to the heart of the delta — Board the launch at Canning or Sonakhali and begin the journey into the Sundarbans. En route, visit Gosaba, the historic Beacon Bungalow associated with Rabindranath Tagore, and the Hamilton Bungalow. Overnight at a comfortable resort or hotel at Pakhiralay, Bali Island or Dayapur.
  2. Day 2, Deep forest, creeks and watchtowers — A full day on the water through the deep forest and river channels of the Sundarbans. Visit the Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki watchtowers, and cruise the creeks at Pirkhali, Gazikhali, Banbibi Bharani, Deul Bharani and Panchmukhani. Overnight at Pakhiralay, Bali Island or Dayapur.
  3. Day 3, Temples and the return to Sonakhali — Visit the Loknath Temple and the Banbibi Temple, take in a few local sights, and begin the return journey by launch to Sonakhali.

When to go

The window we recommend is Monsoon and early autumn — the hilsa season.
*Four sharing room ₹ 3,300 per person · Triple sharing ₹ 3,500 per person · Double sharing ₹ 3,800 per person.

Common questions before booking

What is the cheapest package you run?

Kalimpong Offbeat at ₹3,999 per head for three days and two nights, including homestay, all meals and NJP-to-NJP transport, for groups of seven adults or more.

Do you arrange airport or station pick-up?

Yes. Every package states its pick-up and drop point — NJP, New Mal Junction, Barabhum, Sonakhali, Guwahati, Srinagar, Port Blair, Bangalore and so on — and it is included.

What happens if the weather ruins a day?

Hill and island travel can be affected by landslides, snow, tides and ferry schedules. We will reorder the sightseeing or substitute an arrangement of comparable standard. Your safety decides, not the printed plan.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
