Kerala Travel Guide: Routes, Costs and the Best Time to Go

Eight days from the Chinese fishing nets of Kochi to Kanyakumari. This guide sets out what Kerala actually offers, what a trip
there costs, when to go, and how we run it — written from the routes we operate
ourselves rather than from a brochure.

Why Kerala is worth your leave

Kerala earns its slogan honestly. In eight days you move from Fort Kochi up into the tea slopes of Munnar, across to the spice plantations of Thekkady, down to the backwaters at Alleppey, and finally along the coast to Kovalam and the southern tip of the country.

What a trip costs

We run 1 itinerary here.
Rates are quoted to your group size and hotel category. Every figure below is

A sample of the route

Taking Kerala — God’s Own Country as an example —
Cochin (1N) → Munnar (2N) → Thekkady (1N) → Alleppey (1N) → Kovalam (1N) → Kanyakumari (1N), picking up at Cochin and dropping at Trivandrum:

  1. Day 1, Arrive at Cochin — On arrival at Cochin, meet our representative and transfer to your hotel. Later, set out for sightseeing across Fort Kochi Beach, the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Dutch Palace, St Francis Church and the Chinese fishing nets. The evening is free at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.
  2. Day 2, Cochin to Munnar via Athirapally — Drive from Kochi to the Athirapally waterfalls, roughly two hours away, and explore the falls. Continue 130 kilometres to Munnar, the green paradise of Kerala, with unending tea and spice plantations. On the way, stop at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls. Check in to your hill resort; the afternoon is at leisure or free for Munnar town. Overnight at Munnar.
  3. Day 3, Munnar sightseeing — After breakfast, visit Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Lake with its boating and views across the Western Ghats, Echo Point and the tea plantations. In the afternoon, visit Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and finish with a jeep safari. Overnight at Munnar.
  4. Day 4, Munnar to Thekkady — Check out and drive to Thekkady, the wildlife destination of Kerala and its spice capital, through the hills and valleys of the Western Ghats. Check in, and choose from an optional Kathakali show, a spice plantation visit, an Ayurvedic massage or a Kalaripayattu performance. Overnight at Thekkady.

Common questions before booking

Are children charged full price?

It varies. On several North Bengal departures children below five travel free, five to eight years are charged fifty per cent, and above eight counts as an adult. The price note on each package page states the rule.

How far ahead should I book?

For the Pujas, December and the Kashmir tulip window, six to eight weeks. Offbeat homestays have very few rooms and fill first.

Is Sanjhbati Tourism registered?

Yes. We have operated since 2015 and are MSME approved by the Government of India. Our founder and proprietor is Sajal Manna.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
