The Sundarban Hilsa Festival: Monsoon, Mangroves and a Boat Full of Bhapa

Some trips are about what you see. This one is equally about what you eat.

The delta itself

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest on earth, and moving through it by
launch is unlike any other Indian wildlife experience. The tide decides the day.
Channels open and close. You travel at the river’s pace.

What the route covers

From Sonakhali, taking in Gosaba, the Beacon Bungalow associated with Rabindranath
Tagore, and the Hamilton Bungalow. The second day belongs to the deep forest — the
watchtowers at Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki, and the creeks at Pirkhali,
Gazikhali, Banbibi Bharani, Deul Bharani and Panchmukhani.

And the hilsa

Throughout, the kitchen runs a full hilsa menu alongside the usual Bengali
spread — bhapa, paturi, and whatever else the season allows.

Practicalities

Two nights, three days, from ₹3,300 per person on four sharing, ₹3,500 on triple
and ₹3,800 on double. Nights at comfortable resorts at Pakhiralay, Bali Island or
Dayapur. Very little walking, which makes it comfortable for elders and children.

One honest note

No operator can promise you a tiger. What we promise is the forest, the channels,
the birdlife, the watchtowers and the food.

Common questions before booking

What is the cheapest package you run?

Kalimpong Offbeat at ₹3,999 per head for three days and two nights, including homestay, all meals and NJP-to-NJP transport, for groups of seven adults or more.

Do you arrange airport or station pick-up?

Yes. Every package states its pick-up and drop point — NJP, New Mal Junction, Barabhum, Sonakhali, Guwahati, Srinagar, Port Blair, Bangalore and so on — and it is included.

What happens if the weather ruins a day?

Hill and island travel can be affected by landslides, snow, tides and ferry schedules. We will reorder the sightseeing or substitute an arrangement of comparable standard. Your safety decides, not the printed plan.

Planning your dates

Peak windows — the Pujas, December, and the Kashmir tulip season — fill six to
eight weeks ahead, and offbeat homestays have very few rooms between them. If your
dates are fixed, talk to us early. If they are flexible, tell us and we will
suggest the week that gives you the best weather and the best rate.
